Frequently Asked Questions

Please find below answers to some of our most commonly asked questions.

  • How long is a counselling session?
Up to one hour. Extra time can be booked if needed, this will attract additional charges.
  • What can I expect from my first session?
The first session is all about getting to know you and begin to become comfortable with counselling. For our Equine Assisted Wellbeing clients, the first session is all about getting to know the horses and allowing them to get to know you. It's about allowing you (and the horse) to feel safe and build trust.
  • What if I arrive late for my appointment?
If you arrive late for your session, we will aim to utilise the available time as best we can.
  • What is your cancellation policy?
24 hours notice must be given to avoid being charged the session fee.
  • What ages do you accept for face to face or video call counselling?
Clients must be 18 years or older. Teenagers aged 16-18 may attend counselling sessions on a case by case basis and with parent or guardian permission.
  • Do you accept NDIS patients?
We certainly do and will invoice our services directly to your plan manager.
  • Is parking available?
We have ample off street parking just outside the paddock gate. For face to face counselling at Henri Nouwen House, you will find the entry and parking to the rear of the building.
  • What happens if I do not turn up for my scheduled appointment?
If you fail to turn up for your scheduled appointment without giving a minimum of 24 hours’ notice, the session fee will be charged in full. This policy includes scheduled video or phone based sessions.
  • How often should I attend?
Most clients like to attend weekly or fortnightly in order to maintain consistency and because they love their time with the ponies. Others are sporadic when time permits or on as needed basis. We will discuss how often you should ideally attend once we have met for your first session.
  • Is prior experience with horses required?
Sessions are catered for as though you have never even patted a horse before. IF you have, that is a bonus and we would love to hear about your past experiences, be they good or not so good. This is so we can help you feel comfortable as soon as possible.
  • What should I wear?
Closed-in shoes are a must! We recommend long pants. Gumboots, a hat and sunscreen are a good idea, not just on wet days! And of course, finishing off your outfit with a smile is a must!
  • What should I bring?
We suggest appropriate warm or cold weather clothing and enclosed shoes, with a smile to finish off your outfit.
  • Do your sessions include horse riding?
No, ground based activities only are used for therapy such as brushing, leading or guiding around obstacles.
  • Can I bring carrots or other treats for the horses?
Although our horses would certainly say "yes please", we kindly ask that treats be left at home as feeding the horses in this manner can trigger disruptions to their normal routine and possibly unsettle the herd dynamic.
  • What ages can attend your Equine Assisted Therapy?
Ages 4 and upwards are accepted. All children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Do Equine Therapy sessions still run in adverse weather?
Yes we are very fortunate to have undercover areas and tree shade. For safety reasons, very occasionally we may need to reschedule in the event of an electrical or hail storm.
